Tackling GBVF in the Johannesburg District

16 September 2026 by Con Tributor

GAUTENG – Jhb District police, led by the Deputy District Commissioner Brigadier Lethoko and the station commander of Dobsonville Brigadier Magudulela, joined forces with various stakeholders in a crime awareness campaign on 12 September 2026 focusing on addressing gender-based violence as well as other crimes affecting communities in Braamfischerville at Dobsonville .

The campaign sought to strengthen partnerships, raise awareness, and encourage communities to work closely with law enforcement and other stakeholders in preventing crime and promoting safer communities.Held under the theme “Hlonipha Ikhaya – Heal the Home, Heal the Nation: From Blame to Role,” the campaign emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in addressing GBVF.

Addressing participants, Brigadier Lethoko highlighted that the fight against crime cannot be left to the police alone and called on all stakeholders and community members to play an active role.

“Today, we want to ask a different question: What is my role? We are not here to blame but to recognise that the fight against GBVF starts in our homes and requires all of us to take responsibility.”

The engagement brought together police, CPF, other law enforcement agencies, traditional leaders, and civil organizations who reaffirmed their commitment to coordinated efforts aimed at preventing GBVF, supporting victims, and addressing other crime-related challenges.

The participating stakeholders further demonstrated their commitment by signing a pledge to strengthen collaboration and collective action towards safer homes and communities.

Hulking, Resilient Giant

As of 2026, the Carlton Centre remains caught in a tug-of-war between its past glory and its future potential. There are ongoing discussions about converting portions of the massive office tower into affordable residential housing—a move that would reflect the broader “residentialization” of the inner city. It stands today not just as a skyscraper, but as a barometer for Johannesburg itself: a hulking, resilient giant that has survived economic crashes, political revolutions, and urban neglect, yet still offers the best view of where the city is going.
