Pikitup, the waste management entity of the City of Johannesburg, will be working throughout the long weekend, including Monday, 10 August, which is a public holiday, to address waste collection backlogs caused by the ongoing casual worker strike. All Pikitup depots will operate throughout the weekend to provide waste management services.
The Marlboro, Randburg, Waterval, Avalon and Roodepoort depots, which have been among the most severely affected by the casual worker strike, will prioritise the clearance of outstanding waste collection backlogs throughout the long weekend.
Pikitup anticipates that 11 of the 12 Depots, barring any further disruptions, all outstanding backlogs will be cleared by Tuesday, 11 August 2026, whereas the Avalon Depot should clear all the backlogs by Friday the 14th of August 2026.
This is, however, dependent on Pikitup employees being able to safely perform their duties and collection operations proceeding without disruption. Earlier this week, operations in some areas were disrupted when Pikitup employees were allegedly intimidated and threatened with death, waste collection trucks were stoned, and a fully loaded compactor truck had its waste load dumped on the road in Chiawelo, Soweto.
Law enforcement agencies that have been escorting Pikitup trucks in certain areas will continue to provide security support to ensure the safety of employees and the protection of Pikitup vehicles and equipment, enabling essential waste collection services to continue.
Pikitup apologises for the inconvenience caused by the ongoing casual worker strike and assures residents that every effort is being made to resolve the situation and restore normal waste collection services.
