Designed by architect Rodney Grosskopff, Ponte City was envisioned as the ultimate in “jet-set” urban living. It was the first circular skyscraper in Africa, designed with a hollow “core” or “atrium” that allowed light into the apartments from both sides. The bottom levels featured high-end retail and even a bowling alley. It was a playground for the young, wealthy, and white during the height of the Apartheid era.
